About The Casting Auction:
Would you like to be on stage?
Each year we provide an authentic onstage experience for amateur theater lovers – no experience or training required.
You can be a star … for a price! All that is needed in the desire to participate in a unique and transformative stage experience with the Casting Auction Players (CAP). At the heart of a casting auction show is a cast made up of amateur performers who experience the thrill of a professionally-presented stage production. The purpose of a casting auction is to help small theaters build audience and raise essential funding. These funds directly benefit a theater company’s ability to produce their season. The roles in the show are filled by the participants in the Casting Auction Players. Friends and family can help each participant raise the money, and the funds are used to benefit deserving theaters and arts organizations.
Here's how it works:
The winners rehearse in their free time to perform in a professionally-produced show in a local Chicago theater. By day, the performers are employed in completely different fields such as law, communications, education, sales, human resources, IT, finance, and more!
The Casting Auction Players and the supporting theater select a musical theater show with many fun roles that provide a variety of levels of participation from chorus and walk-on roles to lead roles. The casting auction process begins when participants sign on for lead and supporting roles.
After signing up the participants, the rehearsal process will begin under the direction of a professional director, music director and costumer. The Casting Auction Players join together in an unforgettable and invigorating rehearsal environment as they work to get the show up on its feet!
The culmination of the rehearsal process is the four-night staging of the show, with lights, sets, costumes and a live band. Family and friends gather again in the theater to enjoy the final presentation of the show.
Once bitten by the acting bug, it’s hard not to return again and again...
